Fewer Women Own Crypto Than Men, But They HODL Just as Well: Report

A recent study by cryptocurrency exchange Gemini has revealed that more women are likely to hold cryptocurrencies in 2020 compared to last year. The survey included 2,000 UK residents and showed that crypto ownership among women had risen by 4% in 2020 alone, reaching a total of 13.5%. In comparison, male crypto ownership only saw a 3.9% increase, though men still own more crypto overall with a total of 20.3%.

The study also noted a shift in the age demographic of crypto owners. The fastest growing group in the crypto market is now those aged between 35 and 44, debunking the myth that cryptocurrency is primarily a young person’s game. This demographic now forms 20.2% of all people who own cryptocurrency in the UK.

Notably, the survey found that both genders are increasingly ‘HODLing’ their cryptocurrency – a term in the crypto world meaning to hold onto an asset rather than sell it. Over half of men and women reported holding their crypto for the long term. Interestingly, women were found to be more risk-averse with their crypto investments, with a majority preferring to hold onto their assets for longer periods. These findings suggest a maturing market with more diverse demographics and investment strategies.
