The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has seized three websites used by a Russian AI disinformation campaign. The DOJ has accused the sites of spreading disinformation and violating US laws. The sites were reportedly using AI to create misleading and fake news articles on a range of topics, including the coronavirus pandemic.
The seized domains, newsroomai.com, themespark.net, and Aicdn.com, were accused of violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). FARA mandates that foreign entities spreading propaganda or lobbying in the U.S. must disclose their relationship with foreign governments. The DOJ alleges that these sites failed to do so, hence the seizure.
The domains were reportedly using sophisticated AI technology to generate news stories designed to influence public opinion. While the seizure of these domains marks a significant step in combating disinformation, experts warn that the use of AI in these campaigns will only increase in the future. This emphasizes the need for continuous vigilance and robust cybersecurity measures to counter such threats.
